Today, July 16, is the imprisonment day of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Awami League President. On this day in 2007, Sheikh Hasina was arrested from her residence Sudha Sadan in Dhanmondi in a case filed by the military-backed caretaker government. She was released on bail after about 11 months of imprisonment.
Sheikh Hasina was offering Fajr prayers that day. At that time, members of the law and order forces surrounded her house. She was arrested and produced before the CMM court in Dhaka. The Metropolitan Magistrate denied bail and ordered Sheikh Hasina to be sent to jail. Standing at the gate of the court, she spoke for about 36 minutes and protested the conspiracy against her.
Before the arrest, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, through a letter written to the countrymen, urged the people of the country and the Awami League leaders and activists to stand against injustice without losing moral to protect democracy.
On June 11, 2008, the then caretaker government was forced to release Sheikh Hasina after 11 months of imprisonment and various conspiracies in view of the continuous resistance movement of Awami League and other allied organizations and democracy-seeking countrymen, the uncompromising and firm attitude of Bangabandhu's daughter and the stubborn demands of the countrymen.
