Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has declared BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s Bogura-6 seat in the parliament vacant as he did not take the oath in the stipulated time.
The speaker declared this before the parliament members in the parliament session on Tuesday night. Now according to the constitution Election Commission will arrange election in that constituency.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, no letter was issued on behalf of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to extend time for taking oath as Member of Parliament. So as per constitution the seat of Bogura-6 has been declared vacant.
Earlier at her Sangsad office she told newsmen, I have not received any letter from Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. If any letter would have come to the office of parliament secretariat within April 29 then it will be accepted. If Mirza Fakhrul did not issue any letter then action will be taken as per constitution about that seat.
According to the constitution certain seat will be declared vacant if any member of parliament does not take oath within 90 days from the first session of parliament. But speaker with some valid reasons can extend the time within 90 days.
Gono Forum and some other parties under banner of Jatiya Oikyafront led by BNP took part in the eleventh national parliament election. Of the 300 seats BNP got 6 and Gono forum got 2 seats.
In the eleventh parliament two from Gono Forum and five elected member from BNP took oath as Member of Parliament. But Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that as part of political strategy following party decision he did not take the oath.
