Local government elections to begin in December: CEC
The elections in municipalities, districts, upazilas and union councils will begin in December and it will be concluded in May. Municipality elections will be held with help of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). The Election Commission (EC) thinks that holding all the elections such as upazila and union council elections cannot be possible using the EVMs.
A discussion meeting was held over the initiatives taken by the EC to hold the local government elections participated by the higher officials of the commission at Nirbachan Bhaban on Monday.
After the meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said, the year is nearing to an end. The EC has taken the decision to hold the elections at the end of next December for the municipalities, districts, upazilas and union councils which are going to be expired by January or first week of February of the next year. The EC has planned to complete the election by five phases.
He said, opinions and suggestions were acknowledged in the meeting. Suggestions were given so that no dispute is created at the local stage regarding the voting. The election that are to be due in January and first week of February, we will arrange those at the end of December and we have that kind of preparation.
The CEC said, municipal elections will be held using EVMs. Upazila and union council by-elections or the general election- all cannot be held using the EVMs. A certain number can be arranged. If the NID DG thinks that there is capacity then some can be arranged.
