Of the surrendered 102 yaba traders 16 are relatives of former Member of Parliament from Cox’s Bazar Abdur Rahman Bodi. Of them there are four brothers of Bodi and 12 are other relatives.
On Saturday at around 11 am more than one hundred yaba traders surrendered to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at Teknaf Pilot High School through handover of yaba pills and arms.
According to police sources, there are 73 government listed major yaba traders in Cox’s Bazar. Of them 24 have surrendered. Of these 24 there are 16 people including former lawmaker Bodi’s four brothers Abdul Sukkur, Abdul Amin, Md. Shafiq and Md. Faisal, Bodi’s cousin Kamrul Islam Rasel, nephew Sahedur Rahman Nipu. Besides there are Teknaf upazila council chairman Jafar Ahmed’s son Didar Mia, Hinla union council members Nurul Huda and Jamal Hossain, Teknaf municipal councilor Nurul Basr Nurshad, woman councilor Kohinur Begum’s husband Shah Alam, Teknaf sadar union council member Enamul Haque, two brothers of upazila BNP general secretary- Ziaur Rahman and Abdur Rahman. There are 2 to 16 cases against each person. Of the rest 49 major yaba traders six were killed in gunfight.
In the program Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, it is an ongoing process of government’s anti drugs and illegal arms drives. It will be good for the people who took the opportunity of surrender. Those who did not take the opportunity will have to face the terrible consequences. Because, the government has taken the zero tolerance policy in this regard. If anybody from the local administration is involved in drug trading then stern action will be taken against him. To check the border BGB was asked to strengthen its security measures.
High level police officials including Inspector General of Police Javed Patwary were present on the occasion.
