3rd phase of UZ polls started in 87 upazilas

The third phase of the sixth upazila parishad elections is underway in 87 upazilas across the country.

Voting started from 8:00am on Wednesday (29). It will continue until 4:00pm.

The Election Commission has already taken all measures to make the elections free, fair and peaceful. Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force have deployed 140 thousand 861 members for this purpose. Besides, 300 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across the country.

On Tuesday (28) in response to a question from journalists, EC Alamgir said that there is no problem even if the number of votes are 1%. We have strict instructions.

According to the EC, polling is scheduled in 109 upazilas in this phase, but due to Cyclone Remal, the commission has postponed the polling of 19 upazilas on Monday and 3 upazilas on Tuesday. As a result, voting will be held in 87 upazilas on Wednesday.

The suspended upazilas are — Sharankhola in Bagerhat, Morelganj, Mongla, Koira in Khulna district, Dumuria, Paikgacha, Gournadi in Barishal, Agailjhara, Patuakhali Sadar, Dumki, Mirzaganj, Mathbaria in Pirojpur, Tajumuddin in Bhola, Lalmohan, Rajapur and Kathalia in Barguna, Bamna and Patharghata in Barguna. 

Polling has been suspended in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district, Khaliajuri of Netrakona district and Kachua and Faridganj upazilas of Chandpur district. 

Besides, the election has been postponed due to the disconnection of roads in Khaliajuri upazila and the disconnection of electricity to EVMs in Kachua and Faridganj upazilas.

There are total 1 thousand 152 candidates in this phase. Among them, 397 people are contesting for the post of chairman, 456 people for the post of vice chairman and 299 people for the post of women vice chairman. At this stage, 1 person in the position of chairman, 4 people in the position of vice chairman and 7 people in the position of women vice chairman; That means a total of 12 candidates have already been elected unopposed.
