Bangladesh Promotes UNGA Presidency Bid at Toronto Independence Reception

The Bangladesh Consulate General in Toronto hosted a high-profile reception for the consular corps to mark the nation's Independence anniversary, using the platform to officially highlight Dhaka’s bid for the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The event, held Thursday at the Atria-I Conference Hall, brought together Canadian political leaders, members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament, city councilors, and international business representatives. 

Notable attendees included Ontario’s Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Vijay Thanigasalam, who served as the guest of honor, and Member of the Provincial Parliament Aris Babikian.

In his welcome address, Consul General Shah Alom Khokon paid tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters of the Liberation War. 

He also honored Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for his declaration of independence and lauded former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her contributions to democracy.

Khokon emphasized that the celebration coincides with a significant political transition in Bangladesh. 

He formally announced that Bangladesh has presented its candidature for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the UNGA, with the election scheduled for June 2026. Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been nominated for the prestigious position.

"This candidature reflects our deep commitment to multilateralism and our desire to contribute meaningfully to global governance at a critical time," the Consul General stated, while highlighting Bangladesh’s roles as a climate advocate, a top UN peacekeeping contributor, and a host to 1.3 million Rohingya refugees.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada, Md. Jashim Uddin, attended as a special guest, underscoring the expanding bilateral ties between the two nations. 

He noted a rise in Canadian investments within Bangladesh's manufacturing and infrastructure sectors and praised the Bangladeshi diaspora as a "vital bridge" in strengthening people-to-people connectivity.

The reception followed a separate community event held on March 26 for the Bangladeshi diaspora in the Greater Toronto Area to commemorate Independence and National Day.
