The Government of Bangladesh has announced a massive overhaul of the national healthcare system, involving the recruitment of 100,000 new health workers and a major expansion of kidney dialysis services across the country.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain detailed these initiatives in Parliament on Tuesday while responding to separate queries from treasury bench members Ikramul Bari Tipu (Naogaon-4) and S.M. Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18).
Massive Manpower Boost
The Minister confirmed that the government is taking necessary steps to recruit approximately 100,000 health workers, a move aligned with the current administration's election manifesto.
This recruitment drive aims to ensure adequate manpower to maintain the quality and continuity of healthcare services nationwide.
Providing a breakdown of recent appointments, the Minister noted that on January 22 this year, 2,984 assistant surgeons and 279 dental surgeons were recruited through the 48th BCS.
Additionally, 98 assistant surgeons and 22 dental surgeons were appointed through the 44th BCS, following the appointment of 162 assistant surgeons via the 27th BCS in December last year.
Decentralizing Kidney Care
In addition to manpower, the government is focusing on specialized infrastructure. Minister Husain announced that dialysis services will be introduced or expanded in 59 government hospitals by December 2027.
This initiative falls under a revised project titled “Upgradation of existing kidney dialysis centres to 50-bed capacity in medical college hospitals and establishment of 10-bed kidney dialysis centres in district Sadar hospitals.”
Currently, infrastructure development and the procurement of medical equipment are underway at 15 medical college hospitals and 44 district Sadar hospitals.
"Once the project is completed, kidney treatment will be more accessible and affordable to patients at the divisional and district levels," the Minister stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to reducing the travel and cost burden on renal patients.
