Prime Minister Tarique Rahman officially inaugurated the “Notun Kuri Sports” talent hunt programme on Saturday at Sylhet Stadium in the city’s Rikabi Bazar area.
The initiative is designed to identify and nurture young athletes across the country, with the Prime Minister urging all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, to collaborate in strengthening Bangladesh’s sporting sector.
The formal opening took place in the presence of a large gathering of children and teenagers, marking the official start of a nationwide journey to discover sporting talent at the grassroots level.
During the ceremony, a documentary was screened to highlight the vision and objectives of “Notun Kuri Sports,” followed by the debut of the programme’s official theme song, “Amra Notun, Amra Kuri.”
Following the media presentation, students from the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) performed live demonstrations across eight sporting disciplines: cricket, football, kabaddi, athletics, chess, badminton, swimming, and martial arts.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman observed the performances with great enthusiasm, encouraging the young participants with applause.
Implemented by the Sports Directorate under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the programme draws inspiration from the popular 1980s talent hunt “Notun Kuri,” but shifts the focus specifically toward athletic excellence.
The primary goal of the initiative is to identify, select, and support talented children aged 12 to 14 at a national level.
State Minister for Sports Aminul Haque described the initiative as a landmark step for the country’s sports industry.
He stated that “Notun Kuri Sports” will serve as a strong platform for developing skilled athletes for the future.
He further confirmed that competitions will be organized across the eight featured disciplines—cricket, football, kabaddi, athletics, chess, badminton, swimming, and martial arts—to find promising talent from the grassroots and develop them into world-class sportspeople.
