Road Transport Minister Vows to Cut Traffic Deaths by 50% by 2030

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has reiterated Bangladesh’s target to decrease traffic-related fatalities and injuries by 50 percent by the year 2030.  

Speaking as head of the national delegation at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety taking place at the UN Headquarters, the Minister detailed ongoing legal, policy, and technological updates designed to elevate safety benchmarks across the country's transport network. 

According to a press statement released by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, these national initiatives are aligned with the framework of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

During his address, the Minister underscored key government measures, including the expansion of AI-driven speed enforcement, the enhancement of post-accident emergency care systems and the deployment of targeted highway interventions designed specifically to protect pedestrians.  

Looking ahead, Shaikh Rabiul Alam stated that the administration remains dedicated to drafting, approving, and passing a comprehensive Road Safety Law by December 2027, incorporating the international Safe System Approach alongside global best practices.  

Emphasizing that road safety stands as a major national political objective, the Minister stressed that fulfilling the 2030 goal depends heavily on solid political resolve, collaborative partnerships, and shared accountability. 

He affirmed that Bangladesh remains determined to collaborate with global partners in fostering a safer, healthier, and more equitable road environment for everyone.
