About a week after being hospitalised with a stroke since hearing the news of her husband’s death in a plane crash in Kathmandu, Afsana Khanam, the widow of US-Bangla pilot Abid Sultan, died.

Physicians of National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital declared her dead at 9am on Friday.

“We have made our all-out efforts to save her. But she suffered a cardiac arrest today. After that, we have nothing to do,” said Badrul Alam, a doctor at the hospital.

The medical condition of Afsana went from bad to worse on Thursday and she received ventilation support since then.

A former Bangladesh Air Force officer, Abid was the pilot of the US-Bangla plane that crashed in Nepal on Mar 12. He was killed along with 48 others in the worst aviation disaster in Bangladesh’s history.

There were 71 people, including the crew members, from four nationalities on the aircraft.

On Mar 18, Afsana was hospitalised with a stroke after the news of her husband’s death spread.

She underwent a surgery and was later put on life support as her condition deteriorated to a stage internally known as precoma.

Her condition deteriorated further on Thursday morning, said Dr Badrul.
