5 Million New Voters Added: EC Secretary

Approximately 5 million new voters are being added through the Election Commission's (EC) door-to-door voter list update program, according to EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

Speaking at a press conference at the EC building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Tuesday (February 4), Akhtar Ahmed revealed that a total of 4,970,388 new voters are being included in this update. However, the commission initially aimed to register over 6.1 million new voters.

Additionally, he reported that 1,523,000 deceased voters—accounting for 1.77% of the total voter count—have been removed from the list.

Addressing the registration of female voters, he stated, "This time, 1.6 million women have registered. Those who were left out of the update program will also be included."

The registration process will continue until April 11, allowing eligible individuals to register online or at regional offices. If any household was missed during the door-to-door visits, the commission will investigate the matter.

Regarding concerns over underage voter registration, Akhtar Ahmed said, "We have no reports of 17-year-olds registering by providing false information. However, if such cases are reported, the commission will take appropriate action."
