Dhanmondi 32 Erupts in Protest and Vandalism!

Thursday, 06 February 2025 , 08:46 AM

Dhanmondi 32 has erupted with slogans against the Awami League and fascism. A wave of enraged students and citizens has flooded the area. During the protest, demonstrators stormed the house and carried out acts of vandalism.

Although the protest was scheduled for 8 PM on Wednesday (February 5), people began gathering in the area from the evening. As they assembled, they chanted various slogans. Shortly before 8 PM, the crowd of students and protesters broke into House 32.

Inside and outside the house, furious demonstrators smashed various objects. Some were seen dismantling the house’s grills and windows. At one point, the second floor of the house was set on fire. Additionally, the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also vandalized.

The protesters chanted slogans demanding the execution of Sheikh Hasina and condemning Mujibism.

The agitated student protesters stated that they do not want any trace of the fascists responsible for student killings to remain in Bangladesh. They demanded that Sheikh Hasina be brought back to the country immediately and held accountable.

Earlier, following an announcement that the exiled autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina would be delivering a speech from India—where she fled during the July uprising—calls were made on Facebook for a “Bulldozer March” towards Dhanmondi 32. Additionally, a "March to Dhanmondi 32" program was declared.

Meanwhile, to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order, police had already taken a cautious stance in the area surrounding the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi 32. However, during the vandalism, three police vehicles and a large number of officers were stationed in front of the house. When the students began their rampage, the police left the scene.

Notably, on August 5 of the previous year, in the wake of the "March to Dhaka" program called by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled the country. As soon as this news spread, an enraged crowd set fire to the historic house at Dhanmondi 32 that afternoon.
