United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its ongoing reforms and transformations.
On Friday (March 14) at around 11:30 am, he shared this message in a post on the social media platform X.
"I extend my gratitude to the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, and the people of Bangladesh for their warm welcome. At this crucial juncture of Bangladesh's reforms and transformation, the UN remains committed to supporting the country in building a sustainable and just future," Guterres stated in his post.
Guterres arrived in Dhaka on Thursday, where he was welcomed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain.
On Friday morning, he first met with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, followed by a courtesy meeting with the Chief Adviser's High Representative for Rohingya Affairs, Khalilur Rahman. Later, at around 10:00 am, he visited the Chief Adviser's office for discussions with Dr Yunus.
Following the meeting, Guterres and Dr Yunus departed for Cox's Bazar, where they will participate in various activities at the Rohingya refugee camps. They are also scheduled to join nearly 100,000 Rohingya refugees for Iftar.
Tomorrow, the UN Secretary-General is set to meet with civil society representatives and hold discussions with the National Consensus Commission.
António Guterres, a former Prime Minister of Portugal, is an experienced diplomat. Before assuming the role of UN Secretary-General, he served as the head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and previously visited Rohingya camps during his tenure.
