Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, inaugurated the new headquarters of the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) in the capital on Saturday morning.
The official inauguration took place at 10:30 am in the Agargaon area of Dhaka.
Construction of the MRA building began on 1 February 2023 and was scheduled for completion by 26 June 2023. The project comprises a 16-storey office complex featuring essential facilities such as a boundary wall, main gate, guard room, rainwater harvesting system, septic tank, soak well, signage, mural, and a deep tube well.
Several distinguished guests attended the ceremony, including Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, the interim government's adviser on finance; Dr Ahsan H Mansur, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank; and Professor Helal Uddin Ahmed, the Executive Director of MRA.
Interestingly, although Dr Yunus officiated the inauguration, his name was absent from the commemorative plaque — a notable deviation from tradition. Previously, plaques at such events typically featured the names of high-ranking officials such as Presidents, Prime Ministers, or Chief Advisers. Dr Yunus, however, has chosen not to include his name.
This isn't the first instance of such modesty. During the foundation stone unveiling of a rail-and-road bridge over the Karnaphuli River at Kalurghat in Chattogram, Dr Yunus's name was also deliberately omitted from the plaque, despite his presence at the formal event.
