National Mourning Today to Mark 'July Martyrs Day'

Wednesday, 16 July 2025 , 09:49 AM

Today, Wednesday, July 16, will be observed as a day of state mourning to commemorate 'July Martyrs' Day'. This decision was announced in a gazette notification from the Cabinet Division.

On this day last year, during the anti-quota movement, Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was martyred by police gunfire. The government has declared this day 'July Martyrs' Day'.

The notification states that tomorrow, the national flag will fly at half-mast at all government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions, including educational institutions, all public and private buildings in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh missions abroad.

Additionally, special prayers will be held in all mosques across the country for the salvation of the martyrs' souls. Special prayers will also be arranged in other religious institutions for their peace.

Previously, the government declared July 16 of each year as 'July Martyrs' Day'. This day marks the death of Abu Saeed, who was killed by police gunfire in Rangpur during last year's mass movement.

Furthermore, August 5, the day of the Awami League government's downfall during the mass uprising, has been declared 'July Mass Uprising Day'.
