In a major move to ensure comprehensive healthcare for all citizens, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued directives to swiftly implement the 'e-Health' card system.
The Prime Minister gave these instructions during a meeting with the Health Minister, Minister of State, advisors, and health experts at his office in the Secretariat on Wednesday (March 4). The information was later confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon.
According to the Press Secretary, the Prime Minister directed the Health Minister to begin the rollout of the e-Health card immediately, emphasizing the government's policy of bringing healthcare directly to the people's doorsteps. The Ministry was urged to be more proactive in achieving this goal.
The meeting also touched upon the recruitment of 100,000 health workers (80% female and 20% male) as per the BNP's electoral pledges, alongside filling vacant positions for doctors and staff within the Ministry of Health.
Additionally, the Prime Minister pressured the Health Minister to ensure that doctors regularly attend health centers in remote and underserved areas.
What the New e-Health Card Offers
The e-Health system is a digital transformation of the national healthcare framework. Under this scheme:
Centralized Medical Records: Every patient will hold a specific e-Health card that stores their entire medical history. This allows doctors at any hospital to instantly access a patient's previous records, ensuring better-informed diagnosis and treatment.
Accessibility for Marginalized Communities: The card is designed to streamline the delivery of public health services to the country's most remote populations.
Integrated Referral Network: The project will launch as a pilot in a single district. It aims to connect every level of care—from primary health units to the district’s general hospital and medical college—into a unified digital referral network.
The government expects this digital health infrastructure to play a pivotal role in transitioning Bangladesh toward a modern, world-class healthcare system.
