Titumir College Students Block Roads, Demand University Status

Students of Government Titumir College in Mohakhali, Dhaka, have staged a road blockade in front of the college, demanding the institution's transformation into an autonomous university along with six other key demands.

The protest, which began on Thursday morning (January 30), has caused severe traffic congestion in the area.

Earlier on Wednesday (January 29) at around 5:30 pm, several students launched a hunger strike in front of the college's main gate under the banner of "Hunger Strike for Titumir University's State Recognition."

Students Demand

• Official recognition of Titumir University and the publication of its academic calendar.
• Formation of the university's administration and initiation of the admission process for the 2024-25 academic year.
• Immediate provision of 100% residential facilities or full financial support for student accommodation.
• Introduction of at least two internationally recognized disciplines, such as Law and Journalism, starting from the 2024-25 session.
• Recruitment of qualified PhD-holder faculty members to enhance academic standards.
• Limiting student intake to improve the quality of education.
• Allocation of land and funds to establish international-standard research laboratories.

 

Speaking on the matter, Wahid Islam Anik, a student from the Management Department said, "Five of our fellow students have been on a hunger strike since yesterday. Today, we have taken to the streets. Our primary demand is the transformation of Titumir College into a university, but we also have other pressing concerns. If the government does not meet our demands, we will continue our hunger strike and protests."
