Bangladesh Awami League has collected nomination form for President Mohammad Abdul Hamid for his second consecutive term in the post.
Awami League leader and Chief Whip of ruling party in the parliament ASM Feroz collected the nomination paper on behalf of the President from Election Commission (EC) office at Agargaon in the capital on Friday. A representative team led by him reached at the EC office in the morning.
At that time he said to the newsmen, President Abdul Hamid is working for the country and for the nation with honesty and devotion. For this he was nominated by Awami League.
The candidacy of President Abdul Hamid as the President for the second term was finalized in the Awami League parliamentary board meeting on Wednesday night. Party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at the Gonobhaban.
Later Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader informed the matter to the newsmen.
He said, in the meeting President Abdul Hamid was nominated for the second term unanimously and there was no alternative.
One of the main organizers of the great liberation war Mohammad Abdul Hamid was born in Kamalpur village of Mithamoin upazila under Kishoreganj district on January 1, 1944. His father’s name is Hazi Md. Tayeeb Uddin and mother’s name is Tamiza Khatun.
The five year tenure of President Mohammad Abdul Hamid will expire on April 23. He took the charge of President on April 24, 2013. According to the constitution the presidential election must be held between 90 and 60 days before the completion of the presidential five year term. For this the next election must be held within February 23.
The ruling Awami League is enjoying two-third majority in the parliament. The number of seats of opposition Jatiya Party is 36. There is no chance of nominating presidential candidate from that party. As a result the candidate of Awami League will be elected without contesting. The voters of presidential election are the MPs. In the parliament comprising 350 seats the number of Awami League’s MPs is 232.
Election Commission is taking all out preparation to hold the presidential election. EC also has sent the voters’ list to the parliament secretariat.
Presidential election will be held on February 18. According to the election schedule- the last date of nomination paper submission on February 5, scrutinizing on February 7 and last date of nomination paper withdrawal is February 10. Chief Election Commissioner will act as the Returning Officer in the election.
