ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury no more

Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League President and former Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury is no more (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Max Hospital in Chittagong on Friday early morning. He was 74. He was suffering from kidney complications for long time. He was taken to the hospital yesterday as his physical condition deteriorated. He was given treatment at the Intensive Care Unit. The on-duty physicians declared him dead at around 3 am.

His eldest son Awami League Central Organizing Secretary Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Noufel said, the physicians tried their best. He was given life support at last. He breathed his last at around 3 am. Please pray for my father.

A large number of leaders and workers gathered in front of the hospital in the night after hearing the death news. Some of them burst into tears at that time.

Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Noufel told the media at the hospital that his namaz e janaza will be held after Asr prayer at the Laldighi Maidan on Friday (15 December).

Earlier, Mohiuddin Chowdhury returned to his home in Chittagong on Tuesday after getting well. He started his journey at 5 am on the day from Square Hospital by road boarding on an ambulance. Two physicians of Square Hospital were along with him. He was also accompanied by Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Noufel and other members of the family.

Earlier in the night of 11 November Mohiuddin Chowdhury was admitted to Max Hospital in Chittagong due to severe heart and kidney complications. On the following day he was admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka. On November 16 Mohiuddin Chowdhury was brought to Singapore. He was undergone angiogram there and getting well. After returning from there he was again admitted at Square Hospital on November 26.

Mohiuddin Chowdhury, one of the veteran politicians of Awami League was born in December 1, 1944 at Gohira village under Raujan upazila of Chittagong district. His father’s name is Hossain Ahmed Chowdhury and mother’s name Bedura Begum.

Mohiuddin Chowdhury was associated with politics from his student life. He was blessed by Bangabandhu. He took part in the liberation war. He was associated with politics of Shramik League after the liberation war. After the killing of Bangabandhu in 15 August, 1975 he went to India for training to take revenge. He returned to the country in 1978. He performed his duties in the top positions of Chhatra League, Juba League and Shramik League in his long political career. He led the anti-autocratic movement, port protection movement and non-cooperation movement.

He was elected Chittagong City Corporation Mayor for the first time in 1994. He was elected mayor for the third time in 2005 by defeating a minister of BNP. He served as the Mayor for 16 years. He was the president of Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League before his death.

Awami League General secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obidul Quader expressed condolence over the death of Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
