The body of the eminent actor, playwright, and stage director, Manchasarathi Ataur Rahman, will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar today, Tuesday (May 12), for public viewing. Following the tributes, the legendary artist will be laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard.
According to the Actors' Equity Bangladesh, his body will be kept at the Shaheed Minar from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM today for people from all walks of life to pay their final respects. Subsequently, a funeral prayer (Janaza) will be held in front of his residence in Moghbazar before the burial at Banani Graveyard.
Ataur Rahman passed away late Monday (May 11) night while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. He was 84 years old.
Family sources stated that he sustained serious injuries after a fall at his home last Friday (May 8). His physical condition deteriorated rapidly thereafter, and he had been placed on life support.
A pioneer of the theater movement in Bangladesh, Ataur Rahman made extraordinary contributions to acting, playwriting, and direction. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to arts and culture, he was honored with the Ekushey Padak and the Independence Award, among numerous other accolades.
His passing has cast a shadow of profound grief over the country's cultural landscape.
