The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Friday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of the country over the next 24 hours, issuing a warning that the persistent downpours could trigger landslides in the hilly areas of the Chattogram division alongside causing temporary waterlogging within the metropolitan regions of Dhaka and Chattogram.
In a heavy rainfall warning issued in the morning, the agency stated that the precipitation is expected to impact areas within the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions during the 24-hour period commencing at 10: am on Friday, driven by the influence of an active monsoon.
According to the BMD, heavy rainfall is categorized as precipitation measuring between 44 mm and 88 mm, whereas very heavy rainfall denotes accumulation exceeding 88 mm within the designated forecast duration.
The nation's highest rainfall over the preceding 24 hours leading up to 6 am on Friday was recorded in Chattogram at 211 mm.
Meanwhile, day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged across the country.
Meteorological analysis shows that the monsoon trough extends through Punjab, Haryana, the center of the low-pressure area, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, running directly across central Bangladesh, with an associated trough stretching toward the North Bay.
The BMD further noted that the monsoon remains active over Bangladesh and strong over the North Bay.
