Bangladesh recorded a staggering 309 deaths from measles and related symptoms in May alone, while six more children died in the 24 hours leading up to 8 am on Tuesday, pushing the overall national death toll to 594 since mid-March.
According to official data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest casualties have been officially classified as suspected.
With this latest figure added to the national tally, the total number of suspected measles deaths has reached 504, while the number of laboratory-confirmed deaths remained unchanged at 90.
The outbreak continues to spread across the country, with a total of 1,292 new suspected measles cases recorded in the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, which brings the overall number of suspected infections to 73,362.
During the exact same reporting period, 42 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were officially reported, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 9,136.
The DGHS data further highlighted that since the outbreak gained momentum on March 15, a total of 59,106 suspected measles patients required hospital admission due to severe complications, of whom 54,812 have successfully recovered and been discharged from various health facilities so far.
