A powerful earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook vast areas of India-administered Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at midnight. The epicentre was located in Kargil, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The earthquake struck on Friday (March 14) at around 3 am local time, as per the report.
India’s National Center for Seismology confirmed that the quake originated 15 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface.
Tremors were felt across Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir at around 2:50 am, causing many residents to rush out of their homes in panic. Several people took to social media to share their experiences.
Local authorities have stated that no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.
It is worth noting that Ladakh falls under 'Seismic Zone 4,' a classification indicating a high risk of earthquakes based on geographical vulnerability.
