India's Tough Moves After Kashmir Attack, Pakistan Prepares Response

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken five significant decisions targeting Pakistan. 

These decisions were made during a meeting of the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security on Wednesday (April 23rd). Subsequently, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed reporters on the resolutions.

India's firm stance and the five consecutive major decisions following the terrorist attack have sparked intense discussions between the two nations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, "This attack will be answered firmly. No one will be spared."

Pakistan has already denied any involvement in the attack. However, India has rejected this denial and has instead taken a series of stringent measures, raising tensions anew between the two neighboring countries.

India's Five Major Decisions

• Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty: The first and most significant decision was the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. The rivers of the Indus basin—specifically Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—are crucial sources of irrigation and drinking water for many areas of Pakistan. This decision is seen as a major blow to Pakistan.
• Closure of Attari-Wagah Border: The Attari-Wagah checkpoint on the India-Pakistan border has been closed indefinitely. India has instructed those who recently crossed the border into India to return by May 1st.
• Visa Cancellations and 48-Hour Deadline for Pakistani Nationals: Pakistani citizens residing in India have been given 48 hours to leave the country. Simultaneously, the Indian government has cancelled all types of SAARC visas. No new visas will be issued for the time being.
• Order for Defense Officials to Return Home: Pakistani defense officials stationed in New Delhi have been instructed to leave India within a week. Similarly, Indian defense, naval, and air attachés in Islamabad have been ordered to return to India.
• Reduction of Embassy Staff: The number of Indian embassy officials in Islamabad is being reduced from 55 to 30. This decision will take effect from May 1st.

Pakistan's Reaction
Responding to India's actions, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that India's actions were inappropriate and provocative. He further informed that a meeting of the country's top civilian and military leadership would be held to discuss India's "irresponsible behavior" in detail.

State-run Radio Pakistan reported that the meeting is likely to decide on diplomatic and defensive measures against India.
