Filipino Climber Dies Near Everest Summit Over Exhaustion

A Filipino climber has died while attempting to summit Mount Everest, according to Nepal's Department of Tourism, as reported by the Kathmandu Post.

The mountaineer, identified as 45-year-old Philipp Santiago, reportedly reached Camp IV, located at an altitude of 7,900 meters (25,919 feet), at around 8:00 pm (local time) on Wednesday (14:15 GMT), showing signs of extreme fatigue. He later died at the site, with exhaustion cited as the cause.

Due to the severe weather conditions and the complex logistics involved, Santiago's body remains at Camp IV.

Mount Everest has claimed over 300 lives since records of expeditions began nearly a century ago. In response to the growing number of fatalities, Nepalese authorities are considering tighter regulations for Everest expeditions. These may include increased permit fees and mandatory experience requirements.

On April 18, the Nepalese government introduced the Integrated Tourism Bill in the upper house of parliament. Among its provisions is a rule requiring climbers to have previously scaled a mountain over 7,000 meters (22,965 feet) before attempting Everest.
