New BioNEST Hub at CSIR-CFTRI Set to Supercharge India’s Food-Tech Sector

Wednesday, 08 April 2026 , 08:33 PM

In a significant boost to the nation’s "lab-to-market" pipeline, India's Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh officially inaugurated the BIRAC-BioNEST Incubation Centre at the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) this Saturday.

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and commercial viability, providing startups with dedicated incubation suites, shared infrastructure, and essential regulatory support.

Driving Innovation in High-Value Segments
The incubation ecosystem is already showing formidable momentum. As of March 2026, the center has supported 26 startups, ranging from physical residents to graduated ventures. The focus has pivoted toward cutting-edge, science-driven sectors, including:

  • Precision Fermentation & CRISPR-based technologies
  • Nutraceuticals & Botanicals
  • Probiotics and Postbiotics

The impact is already measurable, with incubated companies collectively filing 12 patents and successfully commercializing several products.

A Call for Sustainability and Industry Linkages
During his interaction with entrepreneurs, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that while the barrier to entry for startups has lowered, long-term survival hinges on continuous value addition.

"Launching a startup is the first step, but sustaining it requires stronger industry linkages and innovation that evolves with consumer demand," the Minister noted.

He urged scientific institutions to deepen collaborations with the private sector, specifically highlighting the growth potential in the ready-to-eat and convenience food segments. He also called for a "convergence" of sectors, suggesting that biotechnology should look for synergies with space technology and specialized nutrition.

Celebrating 75 Years of Research Legacy
The inauguration coincided with CSIR-CFTRI’s 75th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the institute unveiled:

  • Four new MoUs with industry partners.
  • Two new products developed through in-house research.
  • Commemorative publications, including a coffee table book and a compendium of R&D achievements.
  • A special postal cover and picture postcard.

An accompanying exhibition showcased the institute’s massive footprint, which includes over 450 technologies transferred to thousands of licensees.

With startups from this ecosystem now gaining international traction and even finding applications in strategic sectors like defense, the BioNEST center at CFTRI is positioned to be a cornerstone of India’s evolving food-tech sovereignty.
