Voting Underway Across 152 Constituencies Amid High Tension

Thursday, 23 April 2026 , 09:36 AM

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections commenced today, Thursday, April 23, under a blanket of heavy security. Thousands of voters began queuing at polling stations across 152 constituencies in 16 districts early this morning.

Following dawn preparations, polling officially began at 7:00 AM and is scheduled to continue until 6:00 PM. Reports from across the state indicate a significant early turnout, with long lines observed at a majority of polling centers.

Scale and Surveillance
Voting is being conducted across more than 44,000 polling stations. To ensure transparency and order, the Election Commission has implemented rigorous monitoring protocols, including direct observation systems at every center. On average, each booth is catering to over 800 voters.

Security Blanket
An unprecedented security apparatus has been deployed to maintain peace during the process:

Total Personnel: Approximately 500,000 security staff.

Central Forces: Over 2,400 companies of paramilitary forces.

Focus Area: Murshidabad district has seen the highest concentration of security forces due to its sensitive nature.

The Electorate and Candidates
The total voter base for this election exceeds 36 million. The demographic breakdown includes: Male Voters: ~18.5 million, Female Voters: ~17.5 million, Third Gender: Several hundred registered voters.

This phase will determine the political fate of 1,478 candidates, including several sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and high-profile cabinet ministers.

Strategic Districts and Political Shifts
Seats in Malda, Murshidabad, and North Dinajpur remain the focal point for analysts, as the minority vote is expected to be a decisive factor. The political equations in these regions have become increasingly complex.

Adding to the volatility, a newly formed political party is facing internal turmoil following the leak of a controversial "sting" video. The scandal has triggered a rift within the party, with several candidates reportedly defecting to larger, established political outfits just ahead of the polls.

Analyst Perspective
Political analysts suggest that the internal collapse of smaller factions may inadvertently benefit the major political parties. However, with the regional dynamics in a state of flux, the final impact on the electoral outcome will remain uncertain until the counting of the ballots.

As of midday, the atmosphere in West Bengal remains charged as the state navigates this critical first phase of the democratic process.
