India and Norway have officially elevated their bilateral relations to a "Green Strategic Partnership," marking a major milestone during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the Nordic nation.
The announcement followed high-level talks between PM Modi and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo on Tuesday, signaling a broad expansion of cooperation across climate, technology, maritime, and scientific domains.
A New Era of Green Cooperation
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as "fruitful conversations," emphasizing that the upgraded status will inject new momentum into sustainable development.
"One of the most important highlights was the upgrading of our bilateral partnership to a green strategic partnership, which will strengthen cooperation within clean energy, sustainable growth, the blue economy and green shipping, as well as several other areas," PM Modi stated.
A Joint Statement adopted by both nations outlines a roadmap to leverage Norway’s niche technological expertise alongside India’s massive scale and manufacturing capabilities.
The partnership will heavily focus on climate action, circular economy initiatives, and the clean energy transition.
Beyond green technology, both leaders explored deeper collaboration in innovation, research, education, health services, and skills development.
12 Key Agreements and Strategic Initiatives
The elevation of ties was backed by the signing of 12 comprehensive agreements and initiatives on Monday. Key highlights from the breakthrough visit include:
Indo-Pacific Alignment: Norway has formally joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), a move warmly welcomed by India to strengthen maritime security and support a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Maritime & Blue Economy: India announced it will participate in Nor-Shipping 2027 with a dedicated India Pavilion, aiming to boost collaboration in shipbuilding, green shipping technologies, and modern port infrastructure.
Digital Development Partnership: The launch of the India-Norway Digital Development Partnership will focus on digital public infrastructure (DPI) and open digital ecosystems, supporting India's 'Digital India' mission and driving DPI-led transformation in the Global South.
Space Exploration: A new pact on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space will enable institutional collaboration between the two nations' space agencies and encourage private sector investment.
Diplomatic Momentum
The visit to Oslo marks the fourth leg of Prime Minister Modi’s high-profile five-nation tour. He arrived in the Norwegian capital following successful diplomatic visits to the UAE, the Netherlands, and Sweden, underscore India's intensifying engagement with key European and global partners.
