Protests led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi outside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence have now extended to the parliament.
What began as a demonstration by the online-based Gen-Z organization "Cockroach Janata Party" demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Prasad over the NEET-UG 2026 question paper leak has now expanded to include demands for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Congress members of parliament staged protests within the parliament complex on Wednesday morning, July 22.
According to a report by Indian media outlet NDTV, Congress delegates arrived at the parliament wearing black clothing and demonstrated outside the gates. Several other opposition MPs joined the Congress lawmakers in demanding the resignations of Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Prasad.
Samajwadi Party (SP) MPs also wore black scarves to participate in the anti-government protests. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had previously joined Congress demonstrations outside the prime minister's residence and was subsequently detained alongside Congress leaders.
Opposition lawmakers are demanding a parliamentary discussion regarding the NEET issue and the police crackdown on protesting students in the capital on Monday.
Gathering at the parliament building gates on Wednesday, they chanted slogans against the government and police actions targeting students.
NDTV reported that opposition parties insisted on Wednesday that any discussion can only take place after the education minister resigns.
Congress MP Pawan Khera stated, "Education Minister Dharmendra Prasad must resign first, then discussions can happen.
After a baton charge on so many students, what discussion can take place now? Dharmendra Prasad must resign."
Meanwhile, in response to the opposition's demands, the government has agreed to hold discussions in both houses of parliament. Following a meeting with leaders from all parties, the specific rules under which the debate will proceed are being finalized.
