U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that he is losing patience over the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
He made this remark on Sunday (February 9) after a week of witnessing images of Israeli hostages being released by the Palestinian group Hamas, according to Reuters.
Comparing the released Israeli hostages to Holocaust survivors, Trump said, "They look like survivors of the Holocaust. Their condition is terrible. It looks like they haven't eaten for a long time. They are extremely emaciated."
Trump made these comments to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl event.
The Holocaust refers to the genocide of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators.
The U.S. President further stated, "I don’t know how much longer we can endure this. There are certain things we can no longer be patient about."
On Saturday, Hamas handed over three more Israeli hostages—Eli Sharabi, Or Levy, and Ohad Ben Ami—to Israeli authorities.
Observers noted that these three hostages appeared to be in worse condition than the 18 previously released under the ceasefire agreement.
However, according to Reuters, some Palestinian prisoners released by Israel were also frail and emaciated.
Trump’s remarks came just days after he called for the removal of Palestinians from Gaza and suggested that the United States take control of Gaza. His latest comments have now raised new uncertainties regarding the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, which still involves the release of 76 remaining hostages.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on Saturday about the condition of the three Israeli hostages, calling it "heartbreaking" and vowing to investigate and address the situation.
In exchange for these three hostages, Israel released 183 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday.
