Thousands of US Paratroopers Begin Arriving in Middle East

Tuesday, 31 March 2026 , 09:54 AM

Thousands of elite soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Monday (March 30).

The deployment comes as President Donald Trump weighs his next strategic moves in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The arrival follows a Reuters report on March 18, which first revealed that the Trump administration was considering the deployment of thousands of additional troops to the region, raising the possibility of ground operations within Iranian territory.

Strengthening Regional Presence
The paratroopers, hailing from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will join thousands of sailors, Marines, and special operations forces already stationed or recently deployed to the area. Over the weekend, approximately 2,500 Marines arrived in the Middle East.

According to officials speaking on the condition of anonymity, the surge includes:

  • 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters personnel.
  • Brigade Combat Team (BCT) units.
  • Logistics and support teams to sustain extended operations.

While specific deployment locations remain classified, sources noted that while a final decision to move troops into Iran has not been made, these units are prepared for rapid mobilization if ordered.

Trump Aims to Conclude Iran Conflict Without Reopening Strait of Hormuz: WSJ

Strategic Targets: Kharg Island
Military analysts and sources suggest these reinforcements could be utilized for high-stakes objectives, including a potential operation to seize Kharg Island, which handles 90 percent of Iran's oil exports.

Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the Trump administration had discussed an amphibious or airborne assault to take control of the island.

However, such a move is considered "extremely high-risk," as U.S. forces would have to bypass a dense network of Iranian coastal missiles and drone swarms to reach the terminal.
