Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) of the United States, has resigned from her position.

She submitted her resignation letter to US President Donald Trump during a meeting on Friday (May 22), according to a report by the American news outlet Fox News.

The report stated that Gabbard’s husband, Abraham Williams, was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare type of bone cancer.

She decided to step down from her high-ranking government post primarily to stand by her ailing husband and support his treatment and care during this difficult time. Her resignation will take effect on June 30.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard expressed her gratitude to President Trump, stating, "I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the past year and a half. However, unfortunately, I must submit my resignation under deeply challenging circumstances."

Noting that her husband will face major physical and emotional challenges due to his medical treatment in the coming weeks and months, Gabbard added, "At this time, I must temporarily step away from my public service duties so that I can be by my husband’s side full-time and offer him my complete support in this fight. He has always been my source of strength."

Gabbard, a former Democratic Congresswoman, later joined Donald Trump's camp.

After Trump was elected US President for a second term, he selected Gabbard for the top post of this critical intelligence agency. Since taking office, she has played a vital role in US national security and intelligence operations.

White House officials expressed sadness over Gabbard's sudden decision to resign and extended their deep sympathies to her family.
