A Dhaka court has sentenced gold trader Rabiul Islam, also known as Arav Khan, and seven others to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of Special Branch (SB) Inspector Mamun Imran Khan.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib.
Among the convicts are Arav Khan's wife, Suraiya Akter Keya, and six others: Rahmat Ullah, Swapon Sarkar, Mizan Sheikh, Atik Hasan, Sarwar Hasan, and Didar Pathan. Aravv and his wife are currently absconding, while the remaining six were present in court and taken back to prison after the sentencing.
Inspector Mamun was killed on July 7, 2018, in Dhaka's Banani area. His body was discovered two days later in a forest in Gazipur. On July 10, his brother, Jahangir Alam Khan, filed a murder case at Banani Police Station.
Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet on March 31, 2019, naming eight individuals, including Arav. The trial formally began on November 25, 2021, after charges were framed.
The court heard testimony from 26 out of 38 witnesses before reaching its verdict.
