Bangladesh has called upon India to hand over fugitive convicts Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal following the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)'s death penalty verdict for crimes against humanity.
The information was released in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (November 17) afternoon.
The press release states that the ICT's verdict today found the fugitive convicts Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal guilty and sentenced them for their crimes in the July killings. It added, "Any second country providing shelter to these individuals convicted of crimes against humanity would be considered an extremely unfriendly act and tantamount to contempt of justice."
Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "We call on the Government of India to immediately hand over these two convicted individuals to the Bangladeshi authorities. This is also an obligation for India under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries."
Bangladesh had previously made formal requests on several occasions to repatriate Sheikh Hasina, including sending official letters. However, India has not yet responded to such requests.
In response to journalists' questions on the matter, Bangladesh's Foreign Advisor has stated several times that Bangladesh had sent a letter requesting her return, but no positive reply has been received from India.
