A Dhaka court has ordered the immediate seizure of tax files belonging to former minister and Awami League leader Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.

The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz following a formal petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC’s petition alleges that Maya accumulated approximately 1.82 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income between the 2009-10 and 2023-24 tax years.

The commission claims these assets were acquired through bribery, corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering.

Furthermore, investigators flagged "unusual and suspicious" bank transactions totaling 510.37 crore across Maya’s personal and business accounts, involving the large-scale transfer and conversion of funds.

The court's decision authorizes the ACC to take custody of all original income tax records, including permanent and miscellaneous files, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.

Authorities emphasized that seizing these documents is critical to ensuring a fair probe into the allegations and tracking the movement of the contested funds.
