The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on Sunday sent the former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid to jail after showing him arrested in the case lodged over the killing of Abu Sayed during the Mass Uprising in July-August 2024.
“Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid was convicted and sentenced to 10 years' jail in the case on April 9, 2026. He was tried in absentia. A team from Mohammadpur Police Station arrested him yesterday, and he was produced before the tribunal today. The tribunal sent him to jail with the conviction warrant,” said prosecutor Faruk Ahmed.
While replying to a question from a newsman regarding the legal recourse available to the former Vice-Chancellor, the prosecutor clarified that the convict will still be able to file an appeal against his conviction as the full text of the judgment has not yet been officially released.
“He would be able to file the appeal within three days of getting the certified copy of the judgment,” the prosecutor added.
Previously, the second tribunal on April 9, 2026, convicted and sentenced two former policemen to death and 28 others to various jail terms in the landmark crimes-against-humanity case filed over the sensational killing of the BRUR student, Abu Sayed.
