Today, Sunday (May 3), marks World Press Freedom Day. Celebrated globally every year, the day serves as a call for independent journalism and a free press.
This year’s theme is: "Shaping a Peaceful Future: Expanding Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security."
Like the rest of the world, Bangladesh is observing the day through various programs. Journalists across the country are participating in events to demand professional rights, dignity, and safety.
Background and Significance
The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993, following a recommendation from UNESCO's 26th General Conference in 1991. Since then, it has been a cornerstone for:
Bangladesh Drops in Global Index
Coinciding with the day, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released its annual World Press Freedom Index. According to the report, Bangladesh has slipped three spots this year. Out of 180 countries, Bangladesh now ranks 152nd, down from 149th last year.
Local Programs
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organized a rally this morning to mark the occasion. Starting at 9:00 AM from the Officers' Club premises, the rally concluded at the Information Building Complex.
Additionally, a discussion meeting is scheduled for 9:30 AM at the conference room of the Department of Film and Publications (DFP) on Circuit House Road.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Zahir Uddin Swapan will attend as the chief guest, with Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury attending as the special guest.
