The newly elected women Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) reserved seats paid their respects to party founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Monday.
The delegation, consisting of 49 women MPs, was led by BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
During the visit to the mausoleum premises, the lawmakers placed wreaths to honor the contributions of the party’s late leadership.
The visit follows the official swearing-in ceremony held on May 3 at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The MPs were elected unopposed to the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, where Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed administered the oath of office in the presence of Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Tarique Rahman.
Of the 50 reserved seats in Parliament, the BNP has secured a significant majority with 36 seats. After the oath-taking, the lawmakers completed the formal process by signing the official oath papers and the parliamentary register.
Speaking to journalists after the tribute, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir described the visit as a vital gesture of respect toward the party’s foundations.
Highlighting the expectations for the new lawmakers, he stated, “We hope the women MPs elected from reserved seats will play a meaningful role in making the Jatiya Sangsad more effective and functional.”
The event was also attended by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, marking a unified show of strength as the new representatives begin their parliamentary duties.
