Scaloni suspended from Copa America Peru game

Saturday, 29 June 2024 , 10:02 AM

The Albiceleste boss has been handed a one-game ban by Conmebol. Lionel Scaloni has been punished for the team being late after the break in two consecutive matches, along with a US$15,000 fine for the Argentine Football Association.

The South American football federation (CONMEBOL) confirmed the information in a statement on Friday (June 28).

According to the Copa America rulebook, 'The sanction comes as the authorities have found Argentina responsible for breaching articles 104 and 145 of the Copa America rulebook, which state that teams must be present on the field on time for kick-off and when returning from the half-time break. As head coach, Scaloni is held responsible for any delays.'

Scaloni will not be able to stand in the dugout against Peru in the last match of the group stage on Sunday  morning (June 29). He will not be able to attend the post-match press conference also. On the other hand, Messi is likely not to play against Peru. So Argentina may fall in trouble because Scaloni is not in the dugout in this match.

Notably, Argentina Copa America journy by defeating Canada 2-0 in the first match. The world champions beat Chile 1-0 in the second match.
