Seattle is set to merge its maritime identity with the world’s most popular sport by launching a floating fan zone and soccer field on its waterfront for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The "Seattle Soccer Celebration," announced by Seattle Sounders FC, Seattle Reign FC and their partners, will be hosted on a massive barge near Waterfront Park’s Pier 62 on Elliott Bay.
The unique venue is scheduled to operate from June 11 to July 6, offering a diverse lineup of activities including public watch parties on a giant video screen, youth soccer events, cultural programming, and private functions.
Hugh Weber, president of business operations for the two clubs, noted that the waterfront setting is designed to showcase the city’s skyline and provide a memorable experience for visitors.
Beyond the festivities, the floating field carries a symbolic weight as the 52nd mini-pitch constructed in Washington state under the RAVE Foundation initiative.
This project aims to broaden access to soccer across the region in the lead-up to the global tournament.
The initiative is supported by various partners, including Friends of Waterfront Park and presenting sponsor Lenovo, with Waterfront Park also serving as one of the city's official free FIFA fan zones.
Organizers are viewing the event as a catalyst for long-term growth, drawing parallels to the 1994 World Cup which revolutionized soccer’s popularity in the United States.
Weber emphasized that the ultimate goal is to reach those who haven't previously followed the sport, stating that the project aims to "attract people who may not have previously followed soccer and turn them into long-term supporters after the tournament ends."
Fans interested in attending can now register for ticket information through the official event website.
