The Bangladesh cricket team is set to move away from the T20 format after a long gap, as they prepare to kick off a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan today.
Improving their ranking is crucial for a direct qualification spot for the 2027 World Cup.
The match, which begins at 6:00 PM local time in Abu Dhabi, is likely to see the ODI debut of Saif Hassan, with Nurul Hasan Sohan set to take the wicket-keeping gloves.
Meanwhile, Afghan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is determined to turn his team's fortunes around.
The Tigers' camp is riding a wave of confidence. Consecutive victories have transformed the dressing room atmosphere.
The team, which initially carried low expectations into the Asia Cup, went on to defeat both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, even raising hopes of a spot in the final.
This was followed by a clean sweep in the T20 series against the Afghans. However, the focus now shifts to the challenge of the ODI series.
Bangladesh is transitioning out of T20 cricket after playing exclusively in that format for the last three months. Phil Simmons' squad must now adjust their mindset and approach as they switch to the 50-over game after a run of 17 consecutive T20 matches.
Likely Changes and Key Players
The ODI debut of Saif Hassan is almost certain for Bangladesh's first match. Saif, who impressed in the Asia Cup, has earned his first call-up to the ODI squad. If all goes to plan, he will open the innings alongside Tanzid Hasan Tamim.
Additionally, Towhid Hridoy is expected to feature in the XI if he is fit. At the press conference, Bangladesh Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz announced that Nurul Hasan Sohan is the frontrunner for the wicket-keeper role. This means Sohan may replace Jaker Ali Anik in the lineup. The number seven spot is almost certainly reserved for Shamim Hossain Patwary.
The bowling unit is expected to feature a combination of three fast bowlers and one spinner. The pace attack of Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib is highly likely to be retained. Among the spinners, either Tanvir Islam or Rishad Hossain will be selected.
