Argentina is on the verge of securing direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup. However, just before their high-stakes match against arch-rivals Brazil, they have been hit with a major setback—Lisandro Martínez will be absent due to injury.
According to Argentine media outlet TyC Sports, Martínez has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which could sideline him for the entire season. The defender sustained the injury during Manchester United's loss to Crystal Palace, colliding with Ismaïla Sarr in the 82nd minute. While United has yet to confirm the severity of the injury, further tests are needed.
Since Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, Martínez has endured multiple major injuries. In 2023, he missed a month due to a metatarsal fracture, and in 2024, a ligament issue sidelined him for two matches. Now, in 2025, he faces yet another setback.
Adding to Argentina’s defensive woes, Tottenham’s Cristian Romero is also battling an injury. A hamstring issue sustained in December has cast doubt over his availability. As a result, coach Lionel Scaloni may have to rely on veteran Nicolás Otamendi, possibly pairing him with Facundo Medina in defense, while Valentín Gómez could be an option on the bench.
Argentina’s next World Cup qualifier is against Uruguay on March 21 in Montevideo, followed by a home clash against Brazil at Estadio Monumental on March 25.
Several teams have already secured their spots in the 2026 World Cup, and Argentina isn’t far behind. They currently lead the CONMEBOL qualifiers, and if they manage to collect six points against Brazil and Uruguay—along with favorable results elsewhere—they could secure World Cup qualification a staggering 15 months in advance.
