The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging match-fixing and systemic bias by the officiating team in the aftermath of their heart-wrenching 3-2 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16.
Egypt had been in a commanding position, leading 2-0 until the 77th minute, only to concede three goals in the final 13 minutes to the defending champions, Argentina.
The result sent the Pharaohs home and vaulted Lionel Messi’s side into the quarter-finals.
Serious Allegations of Bias
Hany Abo Rida, President of the EFA, submitted a formal written protest to FIFA questioning the integrity of French referee François Letexier and his assistant officials.
The complaint highlights several critical incidents that EFA officials claim directly altered the match's outcome:
Disallowed Goal: A goal scored by Egypt was ruled out, a decision the team vehemently disputes.
Ignored Penalty Claims: The EFA alleges that the referee ignored at least one clear-cut penalty appeal for Egypt.
Questionable Officiating: Egypt’s coaching staff and players have publicly questioned the referee's neutrality, suggesting that the officiating favored Argentina throughout the latter stages of the match.
Claims of Political and Commercial Interference
The fallout has extended beyond the pitch. Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, went as far as to suggest that FIFA is motivated by commercial interests to keep Argentina and Lionel Messi in the tournament for as long as possible.
"It is clear that for business interests, FIFA wants to keep Argentina and Lionel Messi in the tournament," Hassan stated in the post-match press conference.
Demands for Action
The EFA is demanding more than just an explanation; they are calling for:
Independent Investigation: A full and transparent inquiry into the officiating of the match.
Removal of Official: That referee François Letexier be immediately suspended from all remaining matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing "decisive and critical errors" that harmed the game's integrity.
This formal complaint adds another layer of tension to a tournament already marred by refereeing controversies.
While these allegations have ignited significant debate in the football world, neither FIFA nor referee François Letexier has issued an official statement or response to the accusations thus far.
