Durga Puja Ends with Immersion of Idols
The Durga Puja festival concludes today with the immersion of idols, leaving an air of sadness in the pandals and melancholy in households.
According to Hindu belief, every autumn, Goddess Durga leaves Mount Kailash to visit the mortal world as a daughter. The five-day festival, marking her arrival and departure, spans from the sixth to the tenth day of the waxing moon in the month of Ashwin.
Devotees share that the rhythmic beats of drums, vibrant rituals, and prayers now signal the Goddess's departure. With tearful eyes, they bid farewell, waiting another year for her return.
Although the rituals officially ended on Saturday, the immersion of idols, along with festivities like Sindoor Khela (vermilion play), will be completed today.
Throughout the country, idols will be immersed at various local venues accompanied by celebratory processions. Afterward, devotees will receive Shantijal (holy water) as a mark of peace.
To ensure the immersion procession in Dhaka proceeds smoothly and safely, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has deployed special security measures, including dog squads, bomb disposal units, crime scene teams, and SWAT units.
Dhaka’s Immersion Procession Route:
The procession will start from Dhakeshwari National Temple and pass through Palashi Mor, Jagannath Hall, Central Shaheed Minar, Doel Chattar, High Court, Secretariat Hospital, Police Headquarters, Nagar Bhaban, Golap Shah Mazar, Bangabandhu Square, Gulistan, Nawabpur Level Crossing, Rathkhola Mor, Ray Shaheb Bazar, Shankhari Bazar, Jagannath University, and finally conclude at Waiz Ghat via Sadarghat.
Today, a public holiday is observed nationwide for Vijaya Dashami. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and other satellite channels are airing special programs, while newspapers have published special editions and articles to mark the occasion. Additionally, President Md. Sahabuddin will exchange greetings with Hindu leaders to celebrate the festival.
