The government has decided to strictly enforce the ban on the production, storage, transportation, marketing, and use of prohibited polythene and polypropylene shopping bags. As part of this effort, operations and mobile court drives against polythene producers will begin today.

On Saturday, November 2, Tapan Kumar Biswas, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, informed the media of this initiative.

He stated that due to the weekend holiday on Friday and Saturday, mobile courts were inactive, but monitoring activities will resume on Sunday.

Tapan Kumar Biswas said, “Our campaign will be in full swing across the capital. Operations have already started at the district level. We will inspect every shop in the capital to ensure that no one uses polythene.”

The Additional Secretary also mentioned, “Everyone talks about finding alternatives, yet they may not realize that many alternatives are already available in the market. The government is also highly proactive on this matter. Work is ongoing to produce alternatives that are accessible for everyone.”

He emphasized that steps will be taken to prevent the use of polythene and that strict measures will be enforced. “We all know the harmful effects of polythene. Ten years ago, people shopped without it, so it is possible to do so again, although it may take some time to eliminate polythene completely from the market.”

He added that customers can use jute and cloth bags instead of polythene. Strict actions will be taken if polythene bags are found with businesses despite prior instructions.

It is noteworthy that the use of polythene bags has been banned not only in supermarkets but also in wet markets, with a decision to launch operations against factories that produce polythene and polypropylene bags.
