Japan's Deputy Chief of Mission Visits Rohingya Refugee Facilities on Bhasan Char
From November 9 to 12, Mr. Takahashi Naoki, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, along with members of the Japanese Commerce and Industry Association in Dhaka (JCIAD), toured the Rohingya refugee facilities on Bhasan Char, which currently hosts over 35,000 Rohingya refugees. Arranged by the World Food Programme (WFP), the visit included exchanges with government officials, the Bangladeshi Navy, and UN agencies managing the facilities.
The delegation observed several vital facilities, including an e-voucher distribution outlet, fresh food market, Integrated Health and Nutrition Facility, NGO Production Center, and waste management facilities. They also participated in a handover ceremony at a UNICEF-supported school, where JCIAD donated school supplies, underlining the critical support of Japan’s private sector for Rohingya welfare.
Since the Rohingya crisis began in 2017, Japan has provided over $220 million in aid to assist refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. This support has covered essential needs like food, healthcare, sanitation, shelter, protection, and gender-focused services. Minister Takahashi highlighted Japan’s continued commitment, noting, “Our visit, as the first joint delegation of business and government representatives to Bhasan Char, has deepened our understanding of the complex challenges facing the Rohingya. Japan remains committed to contributing to improved humanitarian conditions here.”
Japan aims to keep raising global awareness of the Rohingya situation and is committed to advancing solutions for this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
