During the last five years of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure, over 16,000 murders took place. On average, more than nine people fell victim to homicide every day during this period.

This information has been revealed through crime statistics published on the website of the Police Headquarters. The statistics also show that nearly 2,500 cases of abduction occurred during the final five years of the deposed prime minister, who was ousted in the July uprising.

According to the Police Headquarters' data, crimes against women and children during this five-year period were alarming. From 2019 to December 2023, alongside murders and abductions, there were 9,955 reported cases of robbery and 1,600 cases of dacoity.

Former Inspector General of Police Nurul Huda stated that excessive use of force was evident during the tenure of the past government. "This was not policy-driven," he remarked. "The Hasina government used law enforcement agencies arbitrarily to maintain power, leading to a sharp rise in crimes."

Human rights activist Nur Khan believes the actual situation was even more dire than the statistics suggest. He noted, "The statistics provided by the police for the past five years show that people have died due to various crimes. A significant portion of these deaths resulted from torture or so-called crossfire incidents at the hands of law enforcement agencies."

Nur Khan emphasized that to prevent the recurrence of such crimes against humanity, all incidents of abduction, torture, enforced disappearances, and murders over the past 15 years should be thoroughly investigated. He also suggested that if the interim government takes action against juvenile gangs, social crimes could be reduced.
