Secretariat Reopens; Fire-damaged Ministries Operate Elsewhere
A fire broke out late Wednesday night in Building 7 of the country's administrative hub, the Secretariat, damaging five ministries housed there. The blaze engulfed files and furniture and rendered several rooms unusable. While officials and employees could enter the secretariat premises on Thursday, activities were limited. However, full operations are expected to resume today.
During a visit to the Secretariat on Sunday (December 29), it was observed that while the building reopened in the morning, personal vehicles or motorcycles, apart from those belonging to advisors, were not allowed inside. Everyone's identification cards were checked before granting entry. Additional law enforcement personnel were stationed outside the Secretariat for security.
It has been learned that despite the reopening of the Secretariat, the ministries affected by the fire will operate from alternate locations.
- The Local Government Ministry will operate from Dhaka South City Corporation's Nagar Bhaban.
- The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges will function from Rail Bhaban.
- The Ministry of Youth and Sports will run its activities from Sports Bhaban.
- The Ministry of Labor will work from Labor Bhaban.
- The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications will operate under the Information Ministry, while its officials will work from the Postal Building in Agargaon.
Preparations to reopen the Secretariat were underway throughout Saturday (December 28). Work in unaffected buildings continued as usual, as their power supply remained intact.
Incidentally, the fire broke out in Building 7 of the Secretariat late Wednesday night. It took 19 units of the Fire Service 6 hours to bring the flames under control. Tragically, Noyon, a member of the Fire Service, lost his life during the operation.
Noyon was hit by a truck while crossing the road to connect a line from a water pump. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors announced him dead.
