Fireworks and Festivities Mark Gregorian New Year in Dhaka
Despite strict restrictions, widespread fireworks illuminated the capital as part of celebrations for the English New Year. People from all walks of life joined in joyful festivities to welcome the Gregorian New Year, while social media buzzed with "Happy New Year" messages. This is how the Bengali nation ushered in 2025.
At the stroke of midnight on Wednesday (January 1), the night sky lit up with dazzling fireworks. Alongside this, lantern releases, loud music, and rooftop DJ parties continued throughout the night. However, the loud noises caused significant distress to children and patients.
This year, access to Dhaka University's TSC was restricted for outsiders due to security measures, dampening the usual youthful exuberance seen in past celebrations. Security checkpoints set up from the evening prevented external visitors from entering. Nevertheless, as the clock struck midnight, several hundred university students gathered at TSC to express their joy and welcome the New Year.
Elsewhere in the capital, despite legal restrictions, residents in areas such as Manik Mia Avenue, Gandaria, Sutrapur, Wari, Shankharibazar, Chawkbazar, Lalbagh, Hazaribagh, Azimpur, New Market, and Dhanmondi enthusiastically celebrated the New Year. The festivities included continuous fireworks and jubilant street celebrations during the early hours of the year.
Earlier, as per Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) directives, all outdoor events, gatherings, and assemblies were banned from 6 PM on December 31 to 8 AM on January 1. Additionally, bars were ordered to remain closed, and hotels were permitted to host events only on a limited scale.
