Bangladesh Tops in Apparel Export Growth to the U.S.
In November 2024, apparel exports from Bangladesh to the United States increased compared to the same period in the previous year. During this time, Bangladesh's apparel export growth was 41.6%.
This information has been confirmed by the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) under the U.S. Department of Commerce.
According to OTEXA, Bangladesh's apparel sector faced setbacks at the beginning of the previous year. In January of that year, export growth declined by 36.7%, followed by a further decline of 14.2% in March. In November, Bangladesh exported apparel worth $613.91 million to the United States, compared to $433.56 million in the same period of the previous year.
It has been noted that the apparel export growth in November was higher than in any other month of the year. Despite overall growth in U.S. apparel exports in 2024, it was lower than most months of 2023. From April to August 2024, the export growth ranged from 0.2% to 6.8%.
In the year's final quarter, export growth picked up. In September, the growth was 18.4%, and in October, it was 26.7%.
However, despite the record growth in November, total apparel exports to the U.S. from January to November 2024 were 0.44% lower than in the same period in 2023. In 2023, the export earnings from January to November amounted to $6.79 billion, while in the same period in 2024, it was $6.76 billion.
Mohiyuddin Rubel, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), commented that there had been a significant increase in imports from Bangladesh to the United States from September to November 2024. However, it is also important to consider that the import volume in November 2023 was unusually low.
Sources indicate that during the same period, India, a major competitor of Bangladesh, saw apparel export growth of 4.49%. Additionally, India's apparel exports to the U.S. increased by 13.26%, leveraging local raw materials to export more competitively priced apparel.
According to OTEXA, Bangladesh exported 2.17 billion square meters of apparel to the U.S. in the first 11 months of 2024, which is 3.98% higher than the previous year. Meanwhile, India exported 1.27 billion square meters of apparel, valued at $4.36 billion, compared to 1.12 billion square meters worth $4.18 billion in the same period of the previous year.
Vietnam's apparel exports to the U.S. also grew by 4.48%. From January to November of the previous year, Vietnam earned $13.77 billion from apparel exports, up from $13.18 billion in the same period of the preceding year, marking a 9.02% increase in export volume.
Notably, China's apparel exports to the U.S. from January to November of the previous year saw a 0.30% decline in revenue. Overall, in the first 11 months of the previous year, the U.S. imported $72.94 billion worth of apparel, which is 0.63% higher than the same period in the previous year.
